Maximizing Academic Potential

Many students excel in primary grades with apparently little effort. They then may experience self-doubt and disappointment upon discovering that doing well in the higher grades demands more attention, time, effort, prioritization, organization, persistence, self-discipline, and confidence, no matter the learning ability of the student.  

In addition to the increased scholastic demands, students in higher grades usually have more social and extra-curricular activities than when they are in the lower grades.  Older students need to control commitments so as to allow for sufficient study time.  Declining invitations or opting out of a club or sports participation is difficult, especially considering peer pressure and the natural desire to be part of the group.  It’s easier for a student to put their homework first when they appreciate their scholastic progress and have a positive learning self-image.   

Some students who are used to achieving straight A’s become especially discouraged when they are unable to meet the challenges of more difficult subjects.  Some who are accustomed to doing well are embarrassed when they answer incorrectly in class and begin to doubt their abilities.  Despite their intelligence, these students may avoid taking higher-level advanced placement courses because they lack confidence and a solid knowledge foundation. Their motivation to reach higher educational goals falters.  They may not understand that occasional failure of their efforts in class is to be expected in learning processes.  

Students who are falling behind may stop participating in class and become reluctant to ask a teacher to explain a concept that has confused them.  Finding that they then are unable to study or do homework effectively, they fall more behind as the school year moves on.  Since they are doing the best that they can in their confusion, they may believe that are not capable to succeed in their classes. These students lose confidence in their ability to achieve and eventually stop trying.  Valuable educational opportunities are missed as well as the development of life skills used to face challenges. 

At Lear Education Center our mission is to help students maximize their potential.  We provide one-to-one, systematized, individualized, intensive academic coaching and scholastic tutoring on all levels, primary through college, for most subjects and for most standardized tests.

We interface with schools, working with the curriculum appropriate for each student. Knowledge gaps are filled in and foundational knowledge is reinforced.   As material is presented, the student’s level of comprehension is assessed and any necessary further explanations and corrections are provided immediately to ensure that the student fully understands and builds a knowledge base on correct information. 

Our students are taught confidence-building learning skills and strategies so that they can better achieve in their current coursework and meet the challenges of tomorrow.  We accommodate and compensate for learning differences, helping students meet IEP and remediation goals.
