Reading – A Gift for a Lifetime

Reading well is fundamental to learning well. Lear Educational Center uses the highly acclaimed Wilson Reading System® to maximize the student's potential to read well. The Wilson Reading System® is appropriate for students of all ages, especially those with learning differences. It teaches total word construction, not just phonics. Students learn to spell as they learn to read.

We read by 'decoding', translating the segments of printed words (graphemes) into sounds (phonemes). We read by linking printed letters, vowels, consonants, and syllables to their corresponding sounds to form words. Knowledge of letter-sound relationships and patterns allows us to correctly pronounce written words that we have heard as well as to figure out words that we haven't seen before. This knowledge also allows us to spell words properly, using graphemes to represent the written words (encoding).

Effective reading and comprehension requires fluency with the recognition of segments and patterns of word construction. This rapid recognition and decoding of words is essential to understanding what is being read. The Wilson Reading System® teaches the sounds and the word structures to automaticity. Concepts are presented, reinforced and reviewed to mastery before new concepts are presented. Learning is cumulative with ongoing review and reinforcement of material already learned. This enhances skills and confidence and maximizes retention of the knowledge.

The Wilson Reading System® is interactive, using multi-sensory methods of teaching and reinforcement. Auditory, visual, kinesthetic and tactile presentations are used. Cards are manipulated, phonemes and words are spoken and repeated, sounds are tapped out, and letters are traced on paper and 'sky-written'. This multi-sensory approach involves the various areas of the brain that are employed in learning and memory, maximizing the student's ability to excel.
